Dear SUA Community,

One of the best parts of my job is having a front row seat to important moments in students’ lives and the sisterhood here at Saint Ursula Academy.  This Sunday’s performance of Lost Girl included one of those experiences that I would like to share with you.

First, many congratulations to the cast and crew of the spring play, Lost Girl.  I also want to publicly thank Ms. Kelsey Schwarber and all of the members of the Fine Arts Department who supported the students throughout the play.  It truly takes a village to help young people not only develop their acting skills but also develop as individuals and as a community.  The Fine Arts Department is outstanding in their commitment to both the process and the product being centered on the students

If you saw the show or are familiar with the premise, you know that Lost Girl is a heart-warming coming-of-age play about the internal struggles of growing up and embracing more mature, nuanced understandings of self, first love, loss, and friendships.  The end was particularly moving, and as the students gathered on stage for their final bow, there were understandably tears in the performers and audience from the plot line itself.  It didn’t take much time to understand that the tears were also about the students’ collective feeling that they just accomplished something important together - and that for the seniors, this would be the final time on stage for this type of performance.

When we talk about sisterhood, it is sometimes hard to describe because it is a feeling. At that moment on stage, the feelings of sisterhood were visible. It was clear the students had found a strong sense of sisterhood with each other that was special and that meant something deeply personal to them.  SUA sisterhood was also apparent in the many students who came to support their fellow classmates as audience members.  They offered so many hugs, congratulations, and encouraging words.

I am sharing this experience because it has stuck with me for several days.  I know as parents and guardians, who love your daughter more than words can describe, you want them to have these feelings of strong support and sisterhood. Times like the final performance of senior year are unique, peak experiences, and there are certainly parallels in many areas of student life.

These moments remind us why our commitment to fostering sisterhood is essential to who we are as a community.  We remain dedicated to ensuring that every student not only experiences these milestone moments, but also feels this same sense of belonging each and every day.
