What’s Laura Learning? Last week I attended a presentation about “Raising Digital Natives: Solutions for Healthy Screentime Habits” from "Screenagers" filmmaker and physician, Delaney Ruston. Dr. Ruston also writes a weekly blog, Tech Talk Tuesday. I learned that teen sleep deprivation has increased by 50% since 2012 and over 80% of teens in the US sleep with their devices in their rooms. Yikes! Sleep deprivation takes a hit on one’s ability to retain information and increases risky behaviors. It can be difficult to help teens prioritize their sleep schedule, especially when some factors for sleep deprivation can be out of their control. In the presentation, Dr. Ruston posits that it can be helpful for families to create a “family media plan” that works best for their situation in order for parents and teens to feel like they have some control and agency over their down time and sleep hours.
Thanks to all who came out for Wreath Making! Stay tuned for our next Parent Connect event on February 24 with Frond Plant Shop!
