PowerSchool Breach Update

Date: January 21, 2025
Reading Time: 2 minutes

Dear Saint Ursula Academy Family – Last week we emailed details about a recent cybersecurity incident involving PowerSchool, a software vendor that provides SUA's Student Information System (SIS). We are repeating the information here to ensure all families see it and to provide an update.

UPDATE: PowerSchool has notified Saint Ursula Academy that it will provide two years of Identity Protection and Credit Monitoring Services through Experian at no cost to all students, families and faculty/staff who were impacted. We are waiting for the details and will share it with you as soon as we receive it from PowerSchool.

PowerSchool is the system schools across the nation, including SUA, use to keep student grades, attendance, and contact information about each enrolled student. The company has informed our leadership team that they experienced a cybersecurity incident involving unauthorized access to certain PowerSchool SIS customer data. Unfortunately, they have confirmed that some of the information belongs to Saint Ursula Academy families and educators.

PowerSchool informed us that the data taken primarily includes parent and student contact information with data elements such as name, birth dates, emails, and address information.

We want to share that SUA does NOT store social security numbers or any financial information in PowerSchool and never has.

Information NOT taken in SUA PowerSchool breach

Student/Family social security numbers

Student/Family financial information

Protecting our students and families is something we take seriously. PowerSchool has conducted an investigation, and based on their findings, have offered assurance that there is no ongoing threat and have stated that they believe the stolen data will not be leaked or made public.

While no financial information was involved for SUA families, it’s still good practice, in general, to review your bank statements and credit reports, including those of your students who are close to 18 years of age.

We have shared with you what we know at this point, and we will continue to update you as we receive information from PowerSchool. In the meantime, if you have questions or concerns related to this situation, please contact SUA Chief Technology Resource Officer Laura Bubnick at lbubnick@saintursula.org, and she will do her best to answer any questions you may have.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Sincerely,

Lelia and Kathy
