Last week in advisory:
Costumes vs Regalias. We discussed the difference between the two, watched a video, and did group work to identify costumes and regalia to help us understand when it’s appropriate to wear each one. The biggest takeaway is to make sure costumes are not representing a culture, heritage, or a group of people in any way or form. It’s safer to stay closer to characters when you want to dress like “someone” and add a name tag so there’s no confusion. Painting your face any color to represent is also very inappropriate and disrespectful.
Heritage Celebrations:
Dia de los muertos (Day of the dead) is celebrated Nov 1st and/or 2nd. “It’s a two day holiday that reunites the living and dead. Families create ofrendas (offerings) to honor their departed family members that have passed. These altars are decorated with bright yellow marigold flowers, photos of the departed, and the favorite foods and drinks of the one being honored.” (Reference: https://dayofthedead.holiday/ )
