SERVICE, EQUITY, AND GLOBAL EDUCATION: Empty Bowls, International Women's Day, and DEI Update

Service Update

Thank you to everyone who attended last weekend’s Empty Bowls event, which sponsored Heartfelt Tidbits community gardens. We celebrated the work of the ceramics students and heard about what we can do to help address food insecurity in our community.

Global Education Update

SUA celebrated International Women’s Day this week by inviting guests from various art and dance organizations locally that have a global focus. Students participated in cultural activities and had an optional global potluck lunch, where the arepa station (El Salvador) was a huge hit, along with other dishes from Germany, South Korea, Mexico, and the USA.

DEI Update

More than just looking at culture, DEI is a lens to see how to include EVERYONE, which opened up the opportunity for us to interview an alumna, Theresa Roehrig, who graduated in 1987. Theresa was encouraged and supported a lot through our ES program, led by Geri Walsh, but more to share on that next time! All we can say is that our ES program here at SUA was amazing back then and has grown exponentially since then! The tools ES uses and shares are what helps our students be successful at SUA and after. What a treat it was - Thank you Theresa!

In MARCH we recognize Women’s History Month and Mental Health Awareness Month

For Women’s History Month, the East Foyer cork board was decorated with some of our own SUA women making history along with some inspirational quotes, reminding them that they have what it takes to create an impact. We have many powerful, inspirational, and impactful women to celebrate from the past. However we have so many more here at SUA doing the same here as well as in their communities and organizations they volunteer for.

More from this collection, thanks to Mr. Nicaise’s art class, are also displayed in the Quiet Study Area. We’re thankful for the reminders of how we can be more supportive and inclusive as displayed through this project. Thank you Mr.Nicaise and fellow students who were involved in this project.

Mental Health Awareness is important and sometimes invisible for us to notice that someone needs help. Always make sure to check-in with each other. Remind your children that they are loved and supported by many, and are never alone. 5 minutes of special time isn’t just for when they’re little and should be continued forever. Feed into their love languages so they always feel loved, seen, and supported. Hug them and wait for them to let go before letting them go.
