SERVICE, EQUITY, AND GLOBAL EDUCATION: Service Learning, Exchange Students, and Hispanic Heritage Month

Date: September 17, 2024
Reading Time: 3 minutes

Service-learning is off to a great start at SUA.

  1. Last week, Ms. Smith's Spanish classes went to Catholic Charities & Su Casa to hear about their mission (in Spanish) and to help pack items for Su Casa's upcoming community health fair.

2. The Spanish Honor Society participated in a service project supporting Casa de Paz.

3. During this entire quarter, Ms. Elsbrock’s Social Justice classes have been going to serve at various food pantries to learn about food insecurity and local solutions. Students in these classes go weekly to the following locations throughout the city:

  • Mercy Neighborhood Ministries
  • Madisonville Education and Assistance Center (MEAC)
  • St. Francis Seraph Ministries
  • Academy of World Languages
  • St. Vincent de Paul
  • Our Daily Bread

GLOBAL Education - Exchange Students

SUA hosted 11 Canary Island students for the past month. We ended their stay with a celebration, food, and presentations. Thank you to all the families who hosted these students!

Hispanic Heritage Month: SEPT. 15 - OCT. 15

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, & Belonging Creando Comunidad, Creating Community

Hispanic Heritage Month will rotate through four focus areas per grade level for each student to experience something different each year in their Merici Time:

  • Freshmen: Food/Recipes/Local restaurants to check out.
  • Sophomores: Dance/Regalia/Celebrations.
  • Juniors: Traditions/History/Spiritual Beliefs.
  • Seniors: Music/Poetry/Stories.

Below are some pictures of the Juniors decorating their pinatas and making Papel Picado in honour of Hispanic Heritage Month - Traditions & History.

Check out Cincinnati: Thursdays at Fountain Square for Salsa on the square

If you haven’t checked it out already, head downtown on a date or with the whole family to learn how to dance some Salsa! They also have food trucks so you can experience some of the food. SUA's Ms. Pam Mallory will be there on Sept 19 for some Cuban Salsa if you would like to join her. It’s a great place to have some fun with friends and family, even if you just want to sit back, listen to music, and watch the show.
