Soul of the Literature Classes

Date: January 14, 2025
Reading Time: 1 minute

Students in Dr. Jones’s British Literature classes take a closer look at the intersection between art and literature as they study Charlotte Brontë’s classic novel Jane Eyre. While Jane attends boarding school, she completes three intriguing paintings, which are described in great detail in the novel and later capture the attention of Jane's employer, Mr. Rochester. These images ultimately symbolize aspects of Jane’s experiences, her hopes, her fears, and her dreams for the future. Students work together with their table groups to choose one of these paintings to analyze more in depth, and then they make their own version of the painting they’ve chosen. As they put their ideas together, they decide what their artwork reveals about Jane’s character, how to best illustrate Jane’s art on paper, and what the role of art is in the novel as a whole. Students present their work to the class, and then their paintings are displayed in the classroom for everyone to see!
