Soul of the Literature Classroom

Date: February 27, 2024
Reading Time: 2 minutes

College-prep juniors in British Literature act as critical thinkers and classroom leaders as they give mini-presentations over the semester. This assignment allows them to investigate topics about British culture, ones ranging from Stonehenge and King Arthur to Brexit and the Beatles! Students are guided by their own interests, choosing research topics from a comprehensive list of people, events, and ideas about the United Kingdom; students can propose their own topics, too. Then students come up with a research question to narrow their larger topic; some recent questions have included “Why is Boxing Day celebrated as a bonus holiday?” and “How did Stephen Hawking change the science community, specifically in quantum mechanics?” Once students have their research question, they gather information, using their best critical thinking skills to evaluate internet databases, YouTube videos, and other online sources. They then put together a short presentation, no more than five minutes long, including a Works Cited page, a Google Slides presentation (or other similar technology), and an optional video. The class always benefits from learning more about British culture and from experiencing their leadership in the classroom!
