SOUL OF THE CLASSROOM: Theatre is Finding Our Stories Through the Stories of Others

Date: February 20, 2024
Reading Time: < 1 minute

The reason we tell stories is because it gives us a space to more adequately tell our own. The Freshman Acting Classes here at SUA have been working hard on their monologue projects for Quarter 3 Exams. Their preparation has included script analysis, characterization, and endowment of costumes and props. One of the many joys of storytelling, truth underneath imaginary circumstances, is that the truth we know the best is our own. How else can we play characters other than being authentically ourselves and letting a little bit of us shine through them? We connect to characters often because they remind us of ourselves and allow us to explore new realms of ourselves we have not yet discovered. The students have been gleaming examples of this as they have chosen their monologue and created performances that are not only poignant but authentic to themselves. Actors often ask themselves “what is my objective?” or “What do I want?” What I wish for my students is to be able to tell their story wherever they go, and this work is an excellent place to start.
